The Afghan Hound is thought to date back to the pre-christian era and is considered one of the oldest breeds. Their origin is from Afghanistan where their original name for the breed was Tazi. They first appeared in the United States in 1926, when Zeppo Marx of the Marx brothers was one of the first to bring Afghan Hounds to America.
The breed devotees swear by its faithfulness and endearing personality. Even though the Afghan Hound are pretty good with children and other animals they come with conditions: grooming, running, a high prey drive and the challenge of training.
This agile hound stands as high as 27 inches at the shoulder built for a long days hunt. Their huge paw pads act as shock absorbers on their homelands punishing terrain. It was in Afghanistan that the breed developed its long coat for protection from the cold at high altitudes.
